Our focus on nursing
We are very proud of the fact that nursing is an integral part of the care we offer in our Elizabeth Finn Homes.
All eight care homes incorporate registered nurses as part of our staff teams, all of our home deputy managers and some of our central, senior team are registered nurses or have a clinical background. In our homes our nurses offer a person-centred approach to care, building relationships in the home setting and provide daily reassurance and peace of mind.
In residential care homes without nursing, registered nurses from the community and primary care visit the home to provide nursing as needed, or in some cases residents may need to be moved for treatment elsewhere. In homes like ours with registered nursing care, registered nurses provide 24-hour care in the home.
According to statistics published by Carehome.co.uk* there are about 11,715 care homes for older people in the UK. In March 2023, around just 30% of residential care homes across England, registered with the CQC, provided nursing.
The role of the registered nurse working in a residential care home is a highly skilled one, requiring an in-depth knowledge of long-term conditions associated with ageing, managing complex multiple illnesses and frailty. The kinds of nursing practice that may be needed are diverse, frequently delivered autonomously, while liaising with many other health and social care professionals.
Our nurses understand that a care home is, first and foremost, each resident’s home. They know how important it is to build strong, trusting relationships, not only with the residents themselves, but also with their families, colleagues, and external health professionals. These connections help create a full and meaningful picture of each person’s individual needs.
Through the daily delivery of care, our nurses gain a deep understanding of each resident’s preferences, routines, and wellbeing. This close involvement allows them to quickly recognise any changes in health and respond effectively, ensuring residents receive the right support in the comfort and familiarity of their home.
Dr Emma Worrell is home manager at Halliwell in Tunbridge Wells and just one of our team with a clinical background. Emma has a distinguished career in the NHS of over 30 years, having worked at Great Ormond Street and at the NHS Queen Victoria Hospital Foundation Trust in the field of Maxillofacial Prosthetics.
We have recently opened a new 18-bed Nursing Wing at our Eversfield Home in Reigate which provides the reassurance and security of round the clock, on-site nursing staff and comfortable accommodation delivered by our experienced and compassionate team.
The team is equipped to care for residents with complex medical conditions, chronic and long-term illnesses, post-surgical care, rehabilitation after an injury or stroke, managing mobility issues and those requiring end of life palliative care.
We are proud that across our care homes we attract many former nurses or parents of nurses, as residents, who choose Elizabeth Finn Homes for their own care and support. This is a tremendous testament to the care from our nurses and the entire staff teams.
Knowing that those from the nursing profession choose to live in our homes underlines the quality of care that we offer and that it meets the level of nursing care they expect and appreciate.
By ensuring we have qualified nurses as part of our staff teams we can offer a high level of service excellence, along with the security and peace of mind that their presence and expertise brings.
We make sure to celebrate all our teams but this month being International Nurses Day is another great reason.
