Hotel Services Manager at The Lodge raises funds for cancer charity

This last weekend Tony Howard, our Hotel Services Manager at The Lodge, completed the challenging 100-mile route of The Nello 2026 to raise funds for Force Cancer Charity.

The Nello, Devon’s major cycling event which starts in Topsham, was originally launched in 2000 by Marc Millon in memory of his friend Nello Ghezzo. Since this first Nello Century Cycle Challenge, the ride has raised more than £1.4m for Force Cancer Charity, which works to support people in Exeter and Devon who have been affected by cancer.

A keen cyclist, Tony was inspired to take part in this year’s race following his family’s own experiences in tackling cancer.

“Some of my own family have received cancer treatment and have been fortunate enough to make a full recovery. I know first-hand how important this charity is and the support it provides. I wanted to help Force continue to support other individuals and families affected by cancer.”

Ahead of the ride, Tony set himself the ambitious target of completing the course within six to seven hours. Although he had previously cycled 100 miles in six hours, this was over a relatively flat route, so The Nello’s challenging terrain was an even greater test of his strength, resilience and determination.

Despite the warm weather and grueling hill climbs, Tony achieved his target and raised over £1,180 for the charity. Tony’s colleagues at The Lodge, together with the Elizabeth Finn Homes Senior Management Team, have supported him all the way.

“We are incredibly proud of Tony’s commitment to this important cause and his fantastic achievement,” states Deborah Skinner, General Manager at The Lodge. “He is a valued member of our team at The Lodge and our residents and staff have been behind him 100%.”

Well done Tony! We hope you have a well-earned rest.
