Here we cover some of the commonly asked questions about care home living and how we do things in an Elizabeth Finn home.

General Information

What is Elizabeth Finn Homes?

Elizabeth Finn Homes (EFH) is a not-for-profit provider of residential, nursing, respite and palliative care across its network of homes in England. There are eight homes within the group, supported by an administrative Head Office in London. EFH operates on a unique ‘profit-for-purpose’ basis as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Turn2us. Any surplus at the end of the financial year is passed to the charity, which supports people facing financial insecurity.

Who owns and runs it?

Elizabeth Finn Homes is a wholly owned subsidiary of Turn2us, the charity founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Finn.

What is our mission or philosophy of care?

We seek to provide “loving homes where people flourish”, emphasising dignity, individuality, comfort, safety and quality of life in later years. Homes are designed to feel welcoming and homely, with high standards of care, staff trained in specialist areas, and supportive environments.

Types of Care Provided at Elizabeth Finn homes

What kinds of care services are offered?

Elizabeth Finn Homes provides:

  • Short Stay / Respite Care – for those needing temporary support.
  • Residential Care – 24-hour care with assistance for daily living.
  • Nursing Care – medical care and specialist nursing support 24/7.
  • Palliative Care – end-of-life care, managing pain and symptoms while maintaining quality of life. Many homes hold Gold Standard Framework recognition in this area.
Can someone stay for a short period (Respite) before deciding on longer-term care?

Yes. Short Stay (Respite) care is available, giving individuals and families time to assess whether a care home is the right long-term option.

Choosing a Home & Moving In

How many homes are there and where are they located?

There are eight care homes across England. Each home is unique, offering a range of facilities and beautiful gardens for residents to enjoy.

What is the process for visiting or arranging a stay?

Prospective residents or their families can contact any Elizabeth Finn Home directly to arrange a visit.

Can residents bring personal items / decorate their rooms?

Yes. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms by bringing furniture, photos and treasured mementos, helping to create a familiar and homely environment.

Cost & Funding

How much does care cost?

Costs vary depending on location, type of care needed (residential, nursing, palliative), room type, and any specialist services. Detailed cost information can be obtained directly from the home in question.

Care & Wellbeing

How is medical or nursing care managed?

Elizabeth Finn Homes employ qualified nursing teams who provide 24/7 medical and nursing care, including support for chronic and terminal illness.

What about end-of-life palliative care?

Homes offer specialist palliative care, focusing on comfort, dignity and symptom control. Many of our homes have been recognised with the Gold Standard Framework for excellence in end-of-life care.

How are residents’ daily lives supported? (Activities, Dining, Social Life etc.)

Homes provide a rich “home life”, including restaurant-style dining with nourishing seasonal menus, a varied programme of social and recreational activities, landscaped gardens, communal lounges, and facilities such as hairdressing, a library and physiotherapy. Our teams provide the highest level of support while encouraging independence wherever possible.

Quality, Standards & Regulation

Are the homes regulated / inspected?

Yes. All of our homes are inspected and rated either Good or Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

What recognitions or standards do Elizabeth Finn Homes hold?

Homes hold the Gold Standard Framework accreditation for end-of-life care.

For Families & Visitors

What visiting hours are there?

Visiting arrangements may vary between homes. Please contact the home directly for current guidance.

How is communication with families managed?

Families are kept informed through regular updates, involvement in care planning and meetings with staff. Relatives are encouraged to visit, and to participate in activities and mealtimes.

Can visitors/relatives participate in the care-planning process?

Yes. Families are warmly invited to share insights into residents’ preferences, routines and life histories, helping to tailor personalised care.

Is there a shop on site for basic amenities?

Most homes have a small shop where basic personal items can be purchased. Daily newspapers are also available.

Staffing & Safety

What qualifications do staff have?

Staff include care assistants, registered nurses and palliative care specialists. All staff are trained in regulatory standards, safeguarding, first aid and ongoing professional development. All staff have approved DBS checks before working with residents.

What happens in medical emergencies?

Emergency procedures are in place, and staff are fully trained to respond. Homes work closely with local external medical services when required. Families are informed as soon as practical.

How is medication managed?

Homes have robust policies for safe medication management, covering administration, review and secure storage. Daily handovers and communications between staff ensure individual medication needs are consistently met.

Practical & Legal Matters

What are the terms & conditions of residency?

Full terms and conditions, including notice periods, fees and services, are provided in writing before admission. These can be discussed with the Home Manager to ensure clarity and understanding.

What about privacy, dignity, and pastoral/religious needs?

Residents’ privacy and dignity are central to our care. Religious, cultural and pastoral needs are respected, with arrangements made to support individual preferences.

Can pets visit?

Yes, in most homes pets are welcome to visit, subject to the agreement of the Home Manager and the wellbeing of all residents.

How to Raise Complaints or Feedback

Who can I contact if I’m concerned about care?

Each home has a clear complaints policy. Concerns can be raised initially with the Home Manager. There is also a central contact point at Elizabeth Finn Homes’ Head Office. Compliments and complaints policies are available in every home.
