Ensuring optimal nutrition and hydration for our residents
As we welcome the warm and vibrant days of summer at Elizabeth Finn Homes, it’s an important time to refocus on the crucial aspects of nutrition and hydration for all our residents. The summer heat brings unique challenges, especially for the elderly, making it essential to prioritise their dietary and hydration needs to maintain their well-being and vitality.
Hydration, the cornerstone of summer wellness
Staying hydrated is paramount, particularly for older adults, as the risk of dehydration increases with age. The natural decrease in thirst sensation and the body’s reduced ability to conserve water can lead to serious health concerns, including urinary tract infections and heat stroke. To combat this, we encourage our residents to drink fluids regularly throughout the day. While water is always the best choice, we offer a variety of hydrating options such as herbal teas, freshly squeezed juices, and fruit-infused waters to keep hydration enjoyable and appealing.
We have introduced a home-wide system for nutrition and hydration that monitors and supports residents with any identified issues. Our entire staff team are aware of the system across the home so that everyone can support and assist in good health practices.
Our Green and Red system identifies those residents who need to be encouraged to eat or drink – with green trays and lids, and red trays flag up any resident at risk of choking. As an example, if one of our domestic staff notice a green lid, they will fill up the glass of water, replace water or encourage the resident to drink.
Nutritious and refreshing foods
Summer brings with it an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce. We take full advantage of this by incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into our weekly menus. Hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and strawberries are not only refreshing but also packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Our chefs create light, nutritious dishes that are both appealing and nourishing, ensuring that our residents receive a balanced diet rich in nutrients.
Small, frequent meals for sustained energy
The summer heat can sometimes affect appetite, making it important to offer smaller, more frequent meals. This approach helps ensure that our residents receive the necessary nutrients without feeling overwhelmed by large portions. We focus on providing a mix of proteins, healthy fats, and carbohydrates in each meal to maintain energy levels and support overall health.
Creating a pleasant dining experience
To enhance the dining experience, we arrange outdoor meals in shaded, cool areas, so that our residents can enjoy being outside in a pleasant and more relaxing environment. Additionally, we encourage communal dining to foster social interaction, which can positively impact their overall well-being. We can also cater for family members and guests when they visit so that our residents can enjoy a meal with their loved ones.
At Elizabeth Finn Homes, the health and happiness of our residents are our top priorities. By emphasising proper nutrition and hydration, we ensure that they are able to enjoy the summer months whilst staying healthy and alert.
