The power of tea and talk

A nice natter over a cup of tea might sound simple, but it can make all the difference. There is nothing more comforting and enjoyable than sharing relaxed chat over tea or coffee. Simple daily moments like this are even more crucial for the elderly and go a long way towards fostering emotional wellbeing.

For older adults facing reduced mobility, diminishing friendships and changes in social interactions, these small activities are vital events in the day.  They help give purpose, combat loneliness, aid cognitive decline, reduce stress, and improve overall quality of life.

Boosting well-being

Starting the day looking forward to a chat, a friendly face and a warm greeting significantly lifts the mood and gives purpose.  Refreshments are available at all times in our homes, and there are plenty of comfortable and cosy spaces to sit and enjoy companionship and good conversation. Our staff encourage social interaction, joining our residents and often arranging tea and coffee mornings with visitors, or out in the community.

The benefits of routine

Having some routine each day creates positivity and purpose, improving mood.  Knowing that there is the opportunity for morning or afternoon tea helps break up the day, helps focus the mind and promotes memory retention through conversation and discussion.

Combating loneliness and isolation

There are often long periods of isolation for those living alone in their own home, and loneliness is common.  Moving into a care home brings a new circle of friends and builds new relationships. These daily interactions with staff and other residents are a welcome change and often provide a lifeline and a new sense of worth.

Encouraging independence

Engaging in these small activities means residents can take control and make choices about how they spend their time and with whom. They can decide where and when they want to be and what they want to talk about. Sharing time over a cup of tea provides an opportunity to do something for themselves, preserving dignity and autonomy.

We understand that these small daily events, such as enjoying a cup of tea, are far more important than they may seem. This is why we take the time to ensure the little things are always taken care of. Tea and coffee is freshly brewed and often accompanied by home-baked cakes and biscuits, mindful always of our residents’ favourites.

When the weather gets warmer, our terraces are perfect places to sit and enjoy tea and talk outside, taking in the bird chatter and the lovely views in our gardens.  For now, during these winter months our residents can take their tea and enjoy the views from the comfort of our conservatories, libraries and lounges, which are inviting, warm and homely.

Wherever our residents choose to enjoy their morning or afternoon cuppa, at Elizabeth Finn Homes we understand how these moments truly matter.
