What quality care means at Elizabeth Finn Homes
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. Its primary role is to ensure that health and social care services provide safe, effective, compassionate, and high-quality care.
When the CQC inspect health and social care services, they look at five key areas to ascertain whether facilities meet certain standards: are they safe, caring, effective, responsive to people’s needs and well-led.
This is the basis upon which we work at Elizabeth Finn Homes, it forms a baseline for all that we put in place to ensure quality care in our homes. But we go much further.
It goes without saying that care should be person-centered, specific to each individual’s needs and wants. Following discussion with the resident and their family, and a thorough care needs assessment, we put together a care plan for every resident. This covers care outcomes and targets, an outline on how these will be achieved and how progress will be monitored and measured. Care plans also have to be regularly reviewed and adjusted as necessary and our teams work together with the resident to review and amend plans on a one to basis.
The care plan covers such things as diet, medication, pain management, physiotherapy, mental health support activities and adjustments to an individual’s living environment, likes and dislikes.
Each plan provides an individual pathway or holistic approach to wellbeing, to sustaining the best possible day to day experience for each of our residents. Food and nutrition play a large part in this and our catering teams work with care staff to create menus that offer variety, nutrition and enjoyment.
Quality care is not just the tangible elements though. It is working to create a warm and welcoming environment where everyone is valued, feels comfortable and cared for. Our staff know each of our residents by name and engage with them not only as part of a care routine, but also by being accessible for a chat over a cup of tea, a walk in the home grounds or even a game of cards. Just a friendly face can make a real difference.
Our purpose is to operate as one large family, which includes catering to specific care needs but also general wellbeing, mental stimulation and companionship. Our activities support mental and physical wellbeing, create opportunities for social interaction and help to continue meaningful traditions and favourite hobbies and pastimes. Family members and friends are always welcome and our many volunteers help enhance the culture and warmth in all our homes.
Our Founder Elizabeth Finn, was a social entrepreneur, devoting her later years to charitable works and improving the lives of others. We are proud to carry on her work and uphold her values, maintaining the highest of standards in all we do.
